Karabo Matlala

Karabo Matlala is a Soshanguve (South African) born photographer. At the age of 5 she moved to a small town called Bronkhorstspruit in the Gauteng province, where she still lives.

“I have always been interested in photography from a young age, my dad had various cameras and he loved taking photos so I followed him around using my Coolpix.”

During her last year at college, her interest in photography grew, and she got interested in fashion photography. After college she pursued photography and got a number of event photography jobs, and while doing that continued to develop her skills by doing her personal photography on the side. She loves traveling, as she takes the time to photograph what catches her eyes. Her photography tells a story about the things she crossed paths with during her travels.

“The photographer that really inspires me is Anne Leibovitz, in her photography she turns your fantasy’s/dreams into a realty, her work is absolutely amazing and I strive to learn from her works so as to reach the state were my style of photography can stand out and be something out of this world.”

What does ‘Controlled Chaos’ mean to you?

“To me controlled chaos means something that in theory when looked at it should not work or is out of control but for some reason it does work, or things seem wrong or out of place when in fact they are where they are supposed to be.”
