Studio Drift, Studio Makkink & Bey and Lanvin nominated for Dutch Design Awards 2015

EINDHOVEN, June 8th, 2015 – The finalists for the 13th Dutch Design Awards have been announced. A committee of independent experts drew up a shortlist of 24 finalists in six categories this year. In the categories Product and Fashion a total of eight contenders were selected. The winners will be announced on Saturday 24 October.

Shortlist

The Dutch Design Awards selection committee arrived at this shortlist of finalists after assessing a total of 340 submissions. In October an international professional jury will choose the winner for each of the 6 categories (Product and Fashion, Communication and Service & Systems, Habitat and Design Research). All the prizes will be presented during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Saturday 24 October. The work of all the finalists will be on show in a nine-day exhibition.

Contenders

Nominees in the Product category (industrial design or limited editions that improve or simplify life) are: Dirk Vander Kooij (RVR Chair), Floris Schoonderbeek (Groundfridge), Studio Drift (Shylight), Studio Makkink & Bey (Proofflab Magazine) and de Postsoorteermachine (The Innovation Lab/Flex). In the Fashion category (wearability is not a requirement) the selection comprised: Lernert & Sander (The Sound of COS), Maison the Faux (C’est Vrai ou C’est Faux —Autumn 2015) and Lucas Ossendrijver (Autumn 2015 – Lanvin).

Developments

According to the committee, the submissions for the category Product cover a wide ground. The division between product design for industry and autonomous design appears to have widened. New manufacturing methods are increasingly competing with traditional ones. The classic commissioning is making way for cooperation in which designers participate completely. In the category Fashion, the committee saw that many Dutch fashion designers sway between idealism and rebellion. The quality is high: the finalists are equals to international stars. Dutch Design Awards are prizes for the best in the field of Dutch design. The prize-giving with exhibition during Dutch Design Week and the publication of the Dutch Design Yearbook (in cooperation with the publisher’s nai010) form a platform for the full spectrum of Dutch design.

De finalisten voor de 13e Dutch Design Awards zijn bekend. Een commissie van onafhankelijke experts kwam dit jaar tot een shortlist van 24 finalisten in zes categorieën. In de categorieën Product en Fashion werden in totaal acht kanshebbers geselecteerd. De winnaars worden op zaterdag 24 oktober bekendgemaakt.

Shortlist

De selectiecommissie van Dutch Design Awards kwam tot deze shortlist van finalisten na beoordeling van in totaal 380 inzendingen. Een internationale vakjury wijst in oktober de winnaar aan in elk van de 6 categorieën (Product, Fashion, Communication, Service & Systems, Habitat en Design Research). Alle prijzen worden uitgereikt op zaterdag 24 oktober tijdens Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. Het werk van alle finalisten is dan te zien in een negendaagse overzichtsexpositie.

Kanshebbers

Genomineerd in de categorie Product (industrieel ontwerp of gelimiteerde oplages die het leven verbeteren en vergemakkelijken) zijn: RVR Chair (Dirk Vander Kooij), Groundfridge (Floris Schoonderbeek), Shylight (Studio Drift), Proofflab Magazine (Studio Makkink & Bey) en Postsorteerhulpmachine voor PostNL (Flex / The Innovation Lab). Voor de categorie Fashion (mode, waarbij draagbaarheid geen vereiste is) viel de keuze op: The Sound of COS (Lernert & Sander), C’est Vrai ou C’est Faux —Najaar 2015 (Maison the Faux) en Najaar 2015 collectie (Lucas Ossendrijver voor Lanvin).

Ontwikkelingen

Volgens de commissie bestrijken de inzendingen voor de categorie Product een breed terrein. De scheiding tussen productontwerp voor de industrie en autonoom design lijkt groter te worden. Nieuwe productiemethoden concurreren in toenemende mate met traditionele. Het klassieke opdrachtgeverschap maakt plaats voor samenwerkingen waarin ontwerpers volwaardig participeren. In de categorie Fashion zag de commissie dat veel Nederlandse modeontwerpers zich bewegen tussen idealisme en rebellie. Het niveau is hoog: de finalisten kunnen zich meten met de internationale top.
